Broccoli sprouts contain precursors of a chemical called sulforaphane. This molecule has been studied for its ability to help combat oxidative stress in cells. Cells that have been damaged by this stress can display abnormalities in cell signaling, and can even develop inflammation leading to chronic diseases like cancer.
Sulforaphane has been shown to mobilize, or induce, the body's natural cancer protection resources and help reduce the risk of malignancy. Broccoli is the best source of the chemical precursor to sulforaphane -- glucoraphanin. Now, broccoli sprouts are an "exceptionally rich source" of inducers of cellular enzymes for "detoxifying" chemical carcinogens -- cancer causing compounds. Some of these compounds are potent enhancers of phase 2 enzymes, which speed the detoxication of electrophiles and reactive oxygen metabolites. Therefore, they say, induction of phase 2 enzymes by these compounds can "...protect cells against mutagenesis and neoplasia," according to researchers at Johns Hopkins University.
A new study found that a chemical in broccoli sprouts is able to temporarily improve symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Research reveals that broccoli can:
Prevent osteoarthritis: a British study revealed that broccoli contains a compound called sulforaphane which may help fight osteoarthritis3. Sulforaphane can block cartilage-destroying enzymes by intercepting a molecule that causes inflammation.
Protect your skin against the effects of UV light: Broccoli extract may help prevent skin cancer, not by eating it though, but by applying it directly to the skin. An article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that the damaging effects of UV (ultraviolet) radiation can be appreciably reduced with the topical application of a broccoli extract.
Reverse diabetes heart damage: Using broccoli extract promotes the production of enzymes that help protect heart blood vessels and reduce the molecules that damage them.
Reduce cancer risk: Using Broccoli extract just three times each month and you could potentially reduce the chance of developing bladder cancer by around 40 percent, according to experts at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, USA.
Broccoli plant compound detoxifies air pollutants in the body - research from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, MD, suggests new benefits of broccoli extract.
Improving Cholesterol Levels
Other compounds in broccoli extract may affect blood cholesterol levels, according to research from the Monterrey Institute of Technology in Mexico. The study, published in the "Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry" in 2011, tested hamsters with high LDL cholesterol levels before and after a course of broccoli extract treatments. The animals showed lower cholesterol levels. Animal studies do not always correspond to similar benefits for humans, so researchers don't yet know if human participants will also enjoy lower cholesterol levels on broccoli extract.
The pathogen responsible for stomach ulcers, Helicobacter pylori, is susceptible to antibiotic treatment. Broccoli extract may have a similar antibiotic effect on the microbe, according to a small study published in "Cancer Prevention Research." Participants in the study ate broccoli sprouts rather than receiving broccoli extract, but those who ate the sprouts showed a 40 percent reduction in compounds produced by H. pylori, suggesting that the sprouts killed off a portion of the bacteria. A control group who ate no sulforaphane-rich broccoli sprouts showed no change in their H. pylori levels.
